JUDICIARY AND SECURITY MUST ENSURE THE RIGHTS OF WIDOWS-GENDER ACTIVIST

A Gender Rights Activist, Angela Dwamena -Aboagye has called on the judiciary and security agencies to enforce laws in the Constitution that ensures the right of Widows.

She says the security agencies should not hesitate to arrest family members who abuse the rights of widows.

She stated that there is the need for the State to protect women especially widows against intimidation and abuse from family members who normally take advantage of the death of one’s spouse to deprive the grieving widow of her inheritance.

Angela Dwamena -Aboagye identified lack of enforcement as the reason behind the increase in the cases of human rights abuses against widows.

She was speaking in connection with the commemoration of the World Widows Day which falls today.

The Founder of the Widows Alliance Network, Mrs Joyce Dongotey Paddy also known as Akumaa Mama Zimbi has also called on the government to empower widows in efforts to reduce poverty.

She explains that if widows are duly empowered they will be able to cater for themselves notwithstanding the pressures from family members.

Mrs Joyce Dongotey Paddy whose foundation has about 600 registered widows says the society must stop abusing widows because it will not help to empower women to take up challenges.
