AKYEM CHIEFS PERFORM FINAL RITUALS TO APPEASE GOD OF BIRIM RIVER

The People of Akyem-Oda and its environs in the Eastern Region have performed the last pacification rituals to appease the god of the Birim River.

The Chiefs and elders of the Akyem Traditional Area presented two cattle and 5 bottles of Schnapps.

Heavy rains about two weeks ago led to the Birim River breaking its banks and flooding the Akyem area; five people lost their lives while almost 4,000 people were displaced as the floods washed away their homes.

However the fetish priestess of the river, Nana Felicia attributed the flooding to the revenge the god had taken on the people for undertaking illegal mining activities and polluting the river and asked for sacrifices to be made to appease the god.

After much debate the Chiefs and people agreed and together with the fetish priests performed the first batch of the rituals.

The paramount chief of the Akyem Kotoku Traditional area, Oseadeeyo Frimpong Manso IV believes that this final ritual will restore the respect and dignity of the river.

He also warns that the Traditional Council will take drastic steps to punish anyone who pollutes the river.

Our reporter Kwasi Azor spoke with Oseadeeyo Frimpong Manso IV after the ritual.
